Upcoming Purcell choral and orchestral concert

This event promises to deliver a remarkable selection of choral music spanning five centuries, showcasing the talents of both emerging and established vocalists.

Come Ye Sons of Art is the highlight of the concert. This celebrated piece, composed by Henry Purcell, includes a combination of choral and orchestral elements, along with vocal solos from a soprano, two counter-tenors, and a bass. Originally created to commemorate the birthday of Queen Mary—a key supporter of Purcell and the arts—it embodies joy and grandeur, making it a fitting centerpiece for this performance. The Allegri Players will provide orchestral support, enriching the concert with additional works from Purcell and renowned composers like Handel.

Four outstanding Soloist to Perform

Joining the Allegri Singers are four outstanding soloists. Bethany Carter-Sherlock, a local favourite, brings her extensive experience as a musician specializing in harp, piano, and voice. Her background includes performing in major works, such as Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Messiah, and she has actively taught at local schools and the Mitchell Conservatorium.

Paul Tenorio, another counter-tenor, is known for his strong presence in the Australian Brandenburg Choir. He has a rich performance history, including participation in the International Festival of Sacred Music and Art in Rome. His performances with various orchestras in Newcastle showcase his versatility and range.

Robert Shlemon Adam also lends his voice as a counter-tenor. Having begun his journey as a boy soprano with the Australian Youth Choir, he later moved on to solo roles with notable productions, including those for Opera Australia. His recent academic achievement—a Master of Music in Opera Performance—positions him well for future endeavours both domestically and internationally.

The bass part will be filled by Jesse van Proctor, who boasts a diverse performance background with leading vocal ensembles across Australia. His involvement in programs like the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra Young Mentorship and National Youth Choir of Australia highlights his commitment to the craft. Jesse’s work in various choirs, including Sydney Chamber Choir and St. Andrew’s Cathedral Choir, underscores his wide-ranging talents.

Honouring the memory of Queen Mary

This concert not only honours the memory of Queen Mary but also offers a rich array of orchestral and choral works from various composers. The program includes pieces by Purcell, Handel, Bruckner, Rachmaninov, Josquin des Prés, and Carissimi, ensuring a varied and engaging musical experience.
