Another wonderful year for the Allegri Singers! From successful concerts in Oberon and at Keystone in Bathurst to their recent participation in the Blackheath Choir Festival, the group has showcased a diverse repertoire while maintaining the warm, accessible approach that audiences have come to love.
The Year That Was
However, the real standout moment of 2025 has undoubtedly been the choir’s performance of Handel’s “Messiah” in Orange and Bathurst. This ambitious undertaking demonstrated just how far the group has come in recent years.
Now in his nineteenth year as Musical Director, William Movey has carefully assembled a formidable ensemble of talented singers and musicians. The performance brought together the Allegri Singers, the Willoughby Singers, members of All Saints’ Cathedral Choir, the Allegri Players, and four exceptional vocal soloists. The result was a masterclass in ensemble singing—audiences in both venues rose to their feet at the conclusion of the “Amen” chorus, offering a rapturous standing ovation.
What made the performance truly special was the level of detail visible to those near enough to observe the orchestra, and the emotional journey created by the conductor. The feedback from audience members—particularly those who had the opportunity to appreciate the remarkable skill and precision of the musicians—spoke volumes. There’s no overstating the profound impact of live music performed with such artistry and dedication. A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who was part of this extraordinary journey, especially the audiences whose presence and enthusiasm made the experience so special.
Looking Ahead to 2026
So what’s next? The choir will take a brief break before returning to rehearsals to refresh their Christmas repertoire. They’re already planning performances for the festive season, including a concert for retirement and care communities, as well as looking ahead to expanding their repertoire for the coming year.
One particularly anticipated event is the choir’s traditional pre-Christmas party, generously hosted by members. These celebrations have become something of a highlight, complete with a light-hearted tribute to Bill (the choir’s long-serving and almost infinitely patient Musical Director)—typically performed to a well-known tune and featuring plenty of good humour.
Yet beneath the cheerfulness runs a deeper current of genuine gratitude. The success of the Allegri Singers rests on Bill’s unwavering dedication, his pedagogical skill, and his good-natured approach to bringing this community together through music. It’s a combination that continues to make the choir the vibrant, inclusive group it is today.
